MOSES MENDELSSOHN STIFTUNG

1700/1712

Around 1700, Berend Lehmann founded the Klaus at Rosenwinkel 18 as a Jewish teaching house. Two important Jewish scholars of the time were to work here “in perpetuity” and pass on their knowledge, i.e. train candidates for the rabbinate.

The synagogue in Bakenstraße, also initiated by Berend Lehmann, was consecrated in 1712. It was considered one of the most beautiful baroque synagogues in Germany.
