With the founding of the German Reich in 1871, Jewish people became citizens with equal rights. This encouraged the Jews of Halberstadt to expand their businesses and become more visible in the cityscape. The Jewish community created a prestigious entrance for the baroque synagogue from Bakenstrasse, erected modern buildings for its school at Westendorf 15 and its old people’s home at Wilhelmstrasse 15, and acquired a large plot of land adjacent to the communal cemetery for a third Jewish cemetery.
