City tour Jewish Halberstadt
In Halberstadt, the city topography still allows the history of the Jews as a religious minority to be presented in an exemplary manner for the German-speaking region. The “Walk through Jewish Halberstadt” makes it possible to show the historical conditions in which Jews lived, to understand Jews as active citizens of the city and to convey the internal religious development of the Halberstadt Jewish community. The walk begins with the Klaussynagoge in the former Jewish quarter below Petershof, the former bishop’s palace and later seat of the Prussian government. The route leads via St. Peter’s Stairs, Cathedral Square, to the Jewish school Hasharat Zwi, then back to the Lower Town and ends with a visit to the art project “And the living take it to heart…” at the site of the destroyed Baroque synagogue and the Berend Lehmann Museum in the Mikwenhaus.
