As Halberstadt is one of the few places in Germany where an almost complete ensemble of architectural reminders of the Jewish tradition can be found, the exhibition can also be presented in two authentic locations: The Klaus – the former Jewish teaching house – in Rosenwinkel teaches the basics of Judaism, and the Mikwenhaus in Judenstraße tells the eventful history of Halberstadt’s Jews, which dates back to the 13th century, in the context of the history of Jews in Europe.
Description
The new permanent exhibition of the Berend Lehmann Museum in Halberstadt will open in spring 2021. The museum is part of the Moses Mendelssohn Academy, which has been housed in the former Jewish community center since 1998. The basis for the new permanent exhibition was, among other things, the significantly grown collection of autobiographical texts, documents, photos and profane and ritual objects from Halberstadt Jewish families. The objects illustrate the history of relocations for private or economic reasons and bear witness to the attraction of the Jewish community. They also reveal the glorious past of this community, this center of Jewish scholarship. But the history of persecution, flight and extermination also comes into view. This richly illustrated volume provides an insight into the multifaceted history of Halberstadt’s Jews, reconstructed using unique objects.
